'The Merry Scots' appearing on Opportunity Knocks
'The Merry Scots' was a due featuring a singer and an accordionist. Ex-Arrochar resident Tom Huxtable, stage name Glen Grant, was the singer and Tommy Hind from the Lowlands was the accordionist. They played the circuit of working men's' clubs in the North East of England and Dumfriesshire. After four auditions they finally appeared with Hughie Green on Opportunity Knocks on August Bank Holiday Monday 1970. They finished joint top on the clapometer with 78 points only being finally beaten by Johnny Neal & The Starliners after the public vote. Their sponsor was Bob Murray, an electrical fitter from Carlisle, no relation to Chick Murray introduced them on the show. Here we have an audio recording of their appearance. The clapometer proclaimed them equal first with 78 points. Below are several images of The Merry Scots and their big day.
Unfortunately we don't have video of the performance but here is a nice slide show accompanied by the audio.
